“No, Rose. No! You cannot have a baby in this shit place! Don’t you…

Rose sighed and nodded. “it’s all I want. She’s going to make me really happy. ” She took his hand and placed it over her belly, before looking up at him. “She’ll make you happy too, I promise.” She said softly before pecking his lips and then biting her bottom lip and looking down. The idea of her being a mum scared her a bit… But still.

Weston felt the slight bump over her belly and buried his face in her neck, shaking. He was scared because he wasn’t able to see what the future held. Finally he sighed again and kissed her lips, “I love you,” he said.

Rose smiled a bit and softly ran her fingers through his hair. She wanted peace, that’s all she wanted. Peace at the world. So her little girl (she was so sure the baby was a girl) could grow up in a safe world. She kissed him back softly and whispered, “I love you more.” Rose hugged him tightly and then kissed his cheek. “I’ll make us some dinner.” She said before standing up and walking down to the kitchen. Everything around was about to change.

After a few moments, Rose slowly stood up, and slightly opened the door, still sobbing a bit. She looked at him before completely opening the door and walking out. She sat beside him and rested her head against his shoulder. “I’m sorry…” she said realizing she had overreacted a bit. She tried to understand him, he had a point, but still, couldn’t she be happy ever again?

“No, Rose. No! You cannot have a baby in this shit place! Don’t you understand? This isn’t someplace you can call home. Yeah, everything’s peaceful here, but in other parts of the world, people die everyday! And what if the zombies come here? Then what? Then she’ll end up just like Daniela and all the other little kids I’ve watched die!” Weston yelled bck at her, trying to make her understand why a baby couldn’t live here, would never survive here. Not in this world. Not in this time.

Rose could not believe what was happening, she was crying and sobbing, and she felt like throwing up, but most of all, she was angry as fuck. “Then what the fuck am I supposed to do?! I’m pregnant already! I can’t abort it, I won’t.” She shook her head and took a few steps back. “I’m having this baby whether you like it or not! With or without you! I don’t care, if you dont want to be here for me, then fine, I’ll fucking leave!” She yelled back and then ran inside, before running up the stairs and locking herself in the bathroom. Rose looked at herself in the mirror, her face was red and puffy and she was still crying. She lifted her shirt and placed a hand over her little bump she already had. She must be about 4 months now, since she found out about a month before. Rose sat on the floor and curled up in a ball sobbing and crying.

Weston looked at her as she ran away from him, yelling. He sat and put his head between his knees. This was his fault, they didn’t use the proper precautions. They got too comfortable, and now something that wasn’t even born, probably didn’t even have a heart yet, had to pay for their mistake. Weston sighed and walked into their house and started looking for Rose. He finally heard her sobs coming in from the bathroom. He knocked on the locked door and called, “Rose? Come out… or let me in…. please…” he hated her being so distraught and upset.

Rose frowned and took a deep breath. “Let you in?! So you can try to kill my baby? No way! Just go away! I’ll be gone in a few hours and all of this will be over.” She said being her dramatic self as always. She hated feeling like this. Rose looked around and waited for him to leave, as she continued to silently cry.

“Now you’re just being ridiculous. I just wanna talk about this, okay? Please, love…” Weston sat on the floor and leaned on the wall next to the bathroom door, waiting for her to come out. He regretted reacting the way he did, but really, how else was he supposed to react? Was he supposed to be happy about bringing a defenseless being into such a world? Well, he wasn’t.

After a few moments, Rose slowly stood up, and slightly opened the door, still sobbing a bit. She looked at him before completely opening the door and walking out. Almost a year, since they’ve found each other. Rose was 19 now, and Weston was 21. She felt so young, she felt as if her life had been taken away from her, even if they had now settled in a small town at the west coast of the country, that was not infested by the zombies. She loved the new friends they’ve made, and she wished she could go to college. The key word being wished. As in past. Now, her life had changed. She was pregnant. How would she tell Weston?

Today was the anniversary of Daniela’s death. Daniela was his little sister, who had been bitten by zombies and whom he had been forced to shoot, because death was better than being a monster. This year, Weston sat in the garden of their home, safe and not worried about zombies. Sometimes, he almost felt normal, had a couple of friends, a beautiful girlfriend, and a town to live in where he wouldn’t have to constantly watch his surroundings. He still did sometimes, but not often. He sat and touched the grass, the flowers that bloomed, and though of how she used to pick flowers and put them in his hair, how she was so unsuspecting of everything.

Rose took a deep breath and walked out to their garden. She sat beside him and lightly pecked his cheek. “It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?” She said looking up at the blue sky as he wrapped his arms around her. She felt the need to go running to the bathroom, she shut her eyes to ignore the slight pain, and then let out a breathe when it passed. Rose grabbed his hand. “Weston… I know…I mean, I think… I mean- I just- I really don’t know how to say this.” She took a deep breath and looked up at her boyfriend who was lost in thought staring at the sky. “Wes… Wes, I’m… I’m pregnant.” She blurted out.

Weston smiled at Rose, and then lost himself again. It felt like Daniela was all around him when he was with Rose, like she was just begging him to be happy. And he was. Rose’s words traveled in one ear and out the other. He nodded. Moments later, it hit him. She was pregnant. He took in a sharp breath and almost fell over on his side. “No. Absolutely not. You can’t have a baby. Not here.” he felt like he couldn’t breathe. Babies were the first to go, always, no matter how much you protected them. “No.” he said over and over again shaking his head.

Rose raised an eyebrow at him, and she felt her heart break. She couldn’t believe how he reacted. This was not like him. Rose honestly thought he would be happy to raise this child. Guess she was wrong. “But… But, Weston, I… What do you want me to do?” She said, pulling away from him as tears began falling down her cheeks, a hurt look in her eyes. The pregnancy hormones plus Weston not helping to the situation, was not a good combination. “I can’t just not..have this baby. I’m not getting an abortion.” She started yelling. She took a deep breath and then stood up, glaring at him as he just kept saying no. “Fine. Then I’m out of here.”
